# HOST-IDS-001 No Brute-Force Protection Service

Checks that a log-based intrusion prevention service (fail2ban, sshguard or CrowdSec) is running.

- Domain: Server
- Severity: Low
- Control category: Logging and Monitoring
- Fix effort: low
- CVSS v3.1 vector: `CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N`
- CIS Controls v8: 8.2
- NIST CSF 2.0: PR.PS-04
- CWE: CWE-307
- OWASP Top 10 2021: A07:2021
- NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5: SI-4, AC-7

## Why It Matters

Internet-facing services receive constant guessing. Automatically blocking sources that fail repeatedly reduces noise and risk, and turns logs into active defence.

## How It Detects

Asks systemd whether fail2ban, sshguard or crowdsec is active.

## How to Fix

Install and enable one, for example: apt install fail2ban && systemctl enable --now fail2ban , with an sshd jail enabled.

## How to Verify

```
systemctl is-active fail2ban
```
